Running with Books

Running around town and checking the little free libraries - one of my favorite things to do! In this post two of the latest finds - one on marathon training, the other on taking a walk.

I was very happy to find the Hansons Marathon Method: Run Your Fastest Marathon the Hansons Way in the little free library. It’s the plan that I used for most of my races. I read an article detailing the training in Runner’s magazine many years ago and clipped the plan which made a lot of sense to me. By following it, I was able to get to my many race starting lines - trained sufficiently and most importantly, without injury.

I passed the book on to a fellow runner in my apartment complex. She’s scheduled to run her second marathon in Rome and I am happy to share in her away-race excitement!

My training these days is more of the mundane everyday short runs around town. However, I am often seen running, apparently with ease and a sporting a smile. So, it’s all good if anyone seeing me is encouraged to start a running habit or get back into one!

Hand in hand with the marathon training book I found Do Walk: Navigate earth, mind and body by Libby DeLana, which has to do with the transformative power of a daily walk for your mental health, ideally not counting steps or tracking mileage but just moving and being out and about, whatever the weather.

It inspired me to add more walking into my day which has been a nice new habit. I passed the perfect-sized little book on to my daughter. Hopefully she’ll find some wisdom there.
