A Different Mode of Travel

Recently I undertook my very first cruise with J., a veteran of such travel. It was a test of sorts to see how I would take to it. If I enjoyed it, then we might go on longer cruises in the future.

Carnival Mardi Gras

The Carnival Mardi Gras was our cruise ship and it was about 90 percent full, so we set sail with 6000 or so fellow passengers and an additional thousand crew members. I liken it to a huge traveling hotel.

Our suite was spacious with a nice sized balcony from which to enjoy sunsets and ocean views. Cabin service included a daily animal towel sculpture left on our bed. One day I noticed a whole set of animal towel sculptures on the pool deck lounge chairs!

One of my favorite things to do at each port of call was to go up to the top deck where I could be out in the fresh air and look down as we docked in the morning. The mini track also located there was less busy at that time of day as well.

Nassau, Amber Cover (Grand Turk) & Dominican Republic

We had three ports of call on our 7-day cruise. At each port we disembarked and chose a land tour. The island topographies varied - both Nassau and Amber Cove (Grand Turk) were relatively flat while the Domincan Republic was a volcanic island with mountainous terrain. A highlight there was a tortuous safari ride uphill with the reward of gorgeous island views.

As for future cruising - sure thing, perhaps a Mediterranean or other European itinerary. But no more than 2 weeks max, at least for this runner girl.
